Featured Project of the Month: The Riverside Retreat

Verdi, Nevada

The riverside retreat takes on a lofty goal — to create a residence that makes a profound architectural statement while celebrating the beauty of the Northern Nevada High Desert and Truckee River Corridor.

The design ethos revolved around the stone walls, thought of as a relic of the past during the conceptual design phase, which could be reutilized, contrasted, and elevated with contemporary design.

The stone walls create several north-facing spaces, an enclosed protected courtyard off of the living spaces, and a secluded nook connected to the primary suite.

The north-facing courtyard is anchored by a sloping vegetated roof layered with bands of native seeding that create a seamless flowing view to the Peavine Foothills above.

This courtyard is fully enclosed and protected between the building, stone walls, and native slope, creating the perfect space for outdoor dining and hot tub soaks.

The secluded nook off of the primary suite features a more gardenesque aesthetic with meandering stepping pads and lush foliage.

The reflecting pool water feature cascades first from a slot in the stone walls, giving a peek between landscape spaces. The reflecting pool echoes the stone walls and ornamental grasses, creating further connection between structure and landscape.

Contrasting the protected spaces on the north side of the house is a south facing semi-sunken lounge space to soak in the expansive views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Fully exposed to the wide open spaces and river below, this space allows for the grandeur of the locale to be appreciated.

The landscape design was inspired by the colors, textures, and plant communities along the adjacent Truckee River corridor and the Peavine Foothills, truly celebrating the contrast and connection of contemporary architecture and landscape architecture design and the nature it sits within.

The project is currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2025!
